PERFORMANCES
We focus on enhancing our environmental performance
We continue to focus on reviewing and improving our internal systems to aid data collection and transparency and in turn enhancing our environmental performance. We recently introduced our Environmental Compliance Standards, which set out our commitments to minimize the impacts of our activities on the environment in addition to outlining how we can positively contribute to environmental health.
Our recent key achievements include:
The introduction of our Environmental Compliance Standards
Increased environmental auditing across all of our operations.
The introduction of INX InViron software for environmental data management and reporting
Our environmental performance was recognized by the prestigious Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Awards where the Didipio Mine was awarded the Platinum Achievement Award for environmental performance
HEALTH AND SAFETY
The health and safety of our employees, contractors and local communities is paramount.
The health and safety of our employees, contractors and local communities is paramount. Their well-being underpins our licence to operate and is the foundation on which we build our success.
Improving our health and safety performance is an ongoing priority and we strive to create a mindset in which our workforce believes that an incident and injury free workplace is achievable in today’s mining industry. Effective training and education are critical to developing this mindset and to highlighting the principle that all incidents and injuries are preventable.
COMMUNITIES
Empowering communities surrounding our operations
Our commitment to the empowerment of communities surrounding our operations is integral to our business planning and decision making. We work hard to build and nurture strong, lasting partnerships with local communities and organisations. It’s one of our most important and meaningful investments.
We focus on effective, targeted community development programs that aim to deliver enduring social and economic benefits. Investments into our communities from revenue generated by the business have clearly demonstrated the opportunities that exist for community members and the broader region in which we operate.
Community Health
We strongly believe that the health and vitality of people is integral to creating happy and productive communities. We have invested extensively in community health in order to improve access to quality medical care at all of our locations. Our programs have improved the standards of healthcare in New Zealand and the Philippines.
Health in the Philippines
Health Education & Promotion
Our goal is to improve the health and well being of all members of the community. We will develop a comprehensive community health and well being education and promotion program.
Our Community Medical
We will work with the community to develop an integrated health plan. Our Community Hospital will be aimed at filling those gaps. We will develop an operational handover plan.
Education and Training
We are incredibly passionate about education and its capacity to reduce poverty and help to build productive and autonomous communities. Investment in education initiatives is an integral component of our sustainable development program.
Since 2007, we have helped fund many different programs designed to give our host communities the opportunity to improve their education and equip them with the tools needed to facilitate learning. Our education programs include three main components; subsidy to teacher salaries, additional classroom construction and scholarship grants and education assistance.
We Care Education: Philippines
Our Goal: increase students completing year 12 by 40% over the next 10 years
Adopt a School Program
We will develop a plan to adopt the poorest schools to provide all students with starter packs. We will strive for equality in education for our community.

Employment
We employ locally wherever possible
Our commitment to sharing the benefits of our business is reflected in our recruitment strategy, to employ locally wherever possible. The positions within our operations that directly interact with the community are always filled by local community members. This is of significant importance in the Philippines, where a comprehensive understanding of cultural and linguistic nuances have helped us strengthen engagement outcomes.
Empowering our Female Employees
In 2014, our commitment to creating sustainable economic opportunities for women was formally recognised by the sixth Global CSR Summit and Awards, one of Asia’s most prestigious recognition programs for corporate social responsibility, where we were awarded the Gold Award for Empowerment of Women.
Our objective of offering our female employees an opportunity to transform their futures through training and rewarding growth opportunities are demonstrated at our Didipio Mine where an increasing number of women are taking on non-traditional careers. In addition to entry level positions such as spotters, checkers, dispatchers and haul truck operators, female employees are now also working as mine engineers, geologists, plant metallurgists, control room operators, maintenance planners, safety supervisors, environment officers, mine surveyors and medical physicians. Opportunities offered at Didipio Mine have enabled Marina Bartolome, a haul truck operator, an opportunity to transform herself from a subsistence housewife to a being able to significantly contribute to her family’s financial future.
“Before Delta (OceanaGold’s local contractor) hired me I sold vegetables and other foods to support my children. Working with Delta has changed my life because it was hard to earn money and support my family this way, but now I have good work and am so happy and comfortable with my job,” she said.
We Care Philippines: Employment & Training
Our Goal: 50 new people employed in community by end 2017 (not in the Mine).
We have committed to:
Increase OGPI’s employment rate of local residents in the priority as stipulated in the 2013 MOA
Train and develop local residents to become “employable” or “marketable” in different industries in terms of having the right skills, knowledge and values.
Identify local residents who would make good business leaders and offer them the opportunity to apply for the Business Development Program.
Small Business Development
Empowering communities to become vibrant and self sufficient
We continue to support a variety of programs aimed at empowering communities to become vibrant and self sufficient.

Human Rights
OceanaGold respects human rights across our global operations
For us, this means upholding the human rights of employees, members of communities and honoring the cultures and practices of indigenous peoples wherever we operate.
We also strongly believe that responsible economic development can vastly improve human rights, particularly in developing regions. We utilize the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights to create effective management strategies that encourage dialogue, participation and resolution of issues. We are focused on protecting the rights of indigenous peoples, and have successfully conducted free, prior and informed consent processes. We also commission Cultural Impact Assessments on all our proposed projects.
