Corporate Social Responsibility

NGOs hone computer skills with Acer donation

Three local non-government organizations received computers donated by global tech giant Acer to help their members get employed and eventually improve their lives.

During a recent simple turn-over ceremony at the Acer Philippines office at the Fort in Taguig City, Acer Philippines Managing Director Manuel Wong said that the donation is part of the company’s continuous social responsibility to provide basic computer knowledge for the poor.

Recipients of the new computers are the Zone One Tondo Organization (ZOTO), Fil-Chi Love and Care Foundation and Sandiwaan Center for Learning in Smokey Mountain.

“The bottom line is we want to help the community acquire basic computer skills or knowledge to help them get employed,” said Wong. Wong also cited its partnership with the APEC Digital Opportunity Center which assists ACER Philippines in helping local beneficiaries.

Wong said he feels happy every time he meets beneficiaries of their computer program, which Acer Philippines has been doing for several years now. “I met a parent, she thanked me and said, ‘finally I can communicate with my son.’

Another beneficiary thanked Acer because he was finally hired after he got basic computer skills from us. “Natuto na sila mag-computer dahil sa Acer. These are testimonies that really inspire us,” Wong said.

Zoto, a federation of urban poor community groups represented by Boots Javier, received 12 units of net books “that will help train displaced young people.”

Fil-Chi Love and Care Foundation, headed by its President Nelia Huang, of Bulacan, said that 21 units of computer will go to its mobile projects in remote areas nationwide.

The Sandiwaan Center for Learning, which was created in 1987, will get computers for its young innovators’ hub that focuses on robotics, 3-D printing, among others, said Fr. Benigno Beltran, executive director.

More Mindanao schools partner with Acer Philippines

COMPUTER hardware and software services company Acer Philippines came to Davao City for the first time to meet with their school partners under the Acer Academy Program at Seda Hotel, Bajada Monday, November 28.

With the theme: “Are you Kong-nected?,” the main objective of the event was to connect the teachers and educators with the students and students’ academic need through the relevant technology that Acer Philippines has to offer.

The event brought together Acer Academy members-schools in Mindanao such as Camiguin University, Xavier–Ateneo de Cagayan, St. Rita’s College of Balingasag, St. Mary’s College of Tagum, Our Lady of Fatima Academy, Brokenshire College, Ateneo de Davao University, and University of Mindanao.

The Philippine Women’s College, which had been a member since 2013, received a loyalty award.

Acer Philippines also welcomed Jose Rizal Memorial State University and Davao Medical School Foundation as new additions to the academy program.

The schools each had an educator, an information technology (IT) specialist, school administrators, and students who attended the event.

According to Acer Philippines Business Development Manager Alexis de Guzman, it was the first time such an event was held in Davao City. For the previous years, they brought the provincial delegates to Manila.

For 2016, on its fourth year, regional sessions were launched in Davao City and Cebu City.

The guests were also given a chance to meet Acer’s newest campaign ambassador, top inspirational speaker, author, and award-winning business consultant Francis Kong.

Kong delivered a speech on teaching and community building emphasizing on the importance of the connection between the teachers and students. He defined the gaps the teachers encounter in teaching and what the educators should do to fill them in. He also talked about the process of connecting itself.

Kong pointed how technology is an essential part of everyone’s lives and how its proper use can bring the right amount of convenience to the people especially those in the academe.

He also provided the guests with inspirational stories and personal observations in life and how these observations actually helped in enriching one’s personal and professional capacities.

For four years, Acer Academy Program had been providing their member-schools with various benefits.

Acer Philippines sponsored different school events and activities including campus tour participations. They had provided free trainings for school faculty and IT personnel in the past. Also, students of the member-schools had been enjoying the priority given to them for Acer’s internship program where they get on-the-job trainings and higher possibilities of immediate hiring opportunities.

De Guzman was positive the event was a success and was looking forward for another Acer Academy Program event in Davao City next year.

Delegate-guests of the Acer Academy Program received some P10,000 worth of Acer gift certificates and Acer backpacks.
