Sanofi-Aventis strengthens CSR with POGS alliance

CEBU, Philippines - Sanofi-Aventis Philippines Inc., manufacturer of Lactacyd feminine wash, has strengthened its corporate social responsibility by partnering with the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) in the company’s thrust to help Filipino women fight cervical cancer.

POGS is an organization of obstetricians and gynecologists that aims to improve the quality of women’s health in the country. Sanofi on the other hand is a research-based pharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and distributes therapeutic solutions “to improve the lives of everyone.”

Sanofi has been partnering with POGS since 2002 in undertaking programs designed to increase the level of public awareness on basic facts related to women’s diseases, including cervical cancer. Both entities have been actively involved in conducting nationwide cervical cancer screening program to enable women to have access to pap smear tests and help decrease the incidence of the disease through early detection and management.

According to a press statement, Sanofi once again partners with POGS in intensifying its education campaign on the importance of cervical cancer screening for teenagers. The campaign is called Adolescent Health Issues and Perspective (AHIP,

Sanofi-Aventis believes there is a need to strengthen its commitment to raise awareness on the importance of optimum feminine hygiene. Proper feminine hygiene is key in the prevention of infections among women,” says Arla Obligacion, Sanofi-Aventis director for the Personal Health Division.

The partnership was formalized with an agreement signed last April 22, 2010 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

Obstetricians and gynecologists have identified various risk factors that are closely linked to cervical cancer. Among the most common risk factors are: early sexual contact, having multiple sex partners, and having sex partners who are infected with the human papilloma virus.

Cervical cancer is now the second most common cancer among women. Every year, the disease strikes about 500,000 women worldwide. In the Philippines alone, more than 4,000 cases were reported last year.

Women should be more conscious about safeguarding their health. It is important to always keep in mind the basic facts about care of the reproductive system. Aside from the practice of safe sex, feminine hygiene should also be top on a woman’s list.

There is a way to screen for the presence of abnormal cells that can cause cervical cancer. Health experts recommend regular pap smear. Women should undergo this test with the onset of sexual activity or when they reach the age of 17. A pap smear allows the doctor to see any abnormal change in the cervix.
