Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Procter and Gamble believes that by making their products environmentally friendly, they are ensuring a better quality of life for people and the planet. Having high levels of CSR and CSP is something that Procter and Gamble takes pride in and is part of their growth strategy. They are ranked 22nd on their CSR Index by The Center for Corporate Citizenship. They have both environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

Environmental Sustainability:

Procter and Gamble is working towards long term sustainability by:

Having 100% renewable energy to power their plants.

All products and packaging uses 100% renewable or recycled materials.

Having no waste go to landfills.

Having a product design that satisfies customers and maximizing a conservation of resources.

These goals are very specific and Procter and Gamble believes that it may even take them decades to reach these goals. By reaching these goals by the set deadline they will improve their image in the eyes of their consumers and in the eyes of their stakeholders.

They also have sustainability criteria for any future spaces so that they meet environmental standards.

Here are a few examples of programs:

Lighting upgrades at the P&G Mexico GO that will save 245,000 KWh (or enough power for 16 average homes for a year)

Central HVAC and Building Management System replacement project in the Kobe Technical Center is estimated to deliver 30% energy reduction.

Landscape watering system redesign collects rainwater for irrigation in Buenos Aires saving an estimated 340,000 liters of water a year.

North America furniture reuse, donation and sorting for scrap materials keeps old furniture from the landfill.

Reduction In Water Use
Procter and Gamble looks at their sustainability from two approaches, a product approach and an operations approach.

Product Approach:
They make their product innovation decisions based on consumer needs. They know which design aspects they can sacrifice while still providing customers with an environmentally friendly product that satisfies their needs.

They use renewable and recycled materials in their products and packaging.

They use alternative energy such as solar power, wind power, and geothermal power. They use a wood biomass boiler in the U.S. and have six co-generation plants that produce electricity and heat efficiently and also maximize their use of existing energy resources.

They use Life-Cycle Thinking, which determines the environmental impact a product will have from time that raw materials are gathered to make the product to when the product is disposed.

The successful practice of their product approach is essential to how Procter and Gamble is viewed as a company. Building and adding more initiatives like those listed above will allow for Procter and Gamble to be seen as a green and environmentally friendly company.

Operations Approach:

They strive to reduce waste, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions by improving plant operations.

They have committed to LEED certification on all future plants, distribution centers, and office buildings.

They work with their suppliers to provide the best thinking and benefiting both the business and brands.

They use different types of alternative energy such as solar, wind, and geothermal power. They operate a wood biomass boiler in the U.S. and they have six co-generation plants that produce electricity and heat efficiently and also maximize their use of existing energy resources.

They try to reuse their waste and when they can’t find a use for the waste they either sell or donate it to others who can use it.

Social Responsibility:
Procter and Gamble's corporate cause is Live, Learn and Thrive. This cause focuses on helping children in need around the world. Within Live, Learn and Thrive, is the program called Children’s Safe Drinking Water. Their programs allow children to become healthy and have access to education that will build skills for life. Since 2007, Procter and Gamble has helped over 315 million children.

Other causes that Procter and Gamble takes an interest in include protecting mothers and babies from tetanus. Pampers works with UNICEF to combat this cause by delivering vaccines. Each pack of Pampers bought results in one dose of vaccine being donated. Procter and Gamble supports Feeding America to fight against child hunger. They provide food and other groceries to families that have no means of providing these basic essentials. Protecting Futures works toward keeping young girls in school and providing them with the appropriate information they will need for the future. They have reached over 450,000 girls with this effort. P&G Hope Schools provides children with better access to education in areas of China were people are very poor.

Their Shiksha program helps provide the NGO with funds to help address the causes of poor education in India.

They also partnered with United Way to provide better education in Latin America. They primarily focus on younger children under the age of 6. "Born Learning" focuses on child development by improving child care centers.

Procter and Gamble goes to the extreme when it comes to acting responsibly. By continuing to fund and support these causes they can only improve the way that they are viewed as a whole. In the future they could continue partnering with various causes when new products are created. They could also invest in other causes that they haven't created so that they can focus more resources towards other ventures. Overall Procter and Gamble does a lot to build their high CSR but there is always more that can be done. By going above and beyond expectation they can gain new consumers who are impressed by their efforts as well as ensuring their stakeholders that they are a good socially and environmentally responsible company.

Procter and Gamble‘s operates within the laws and maintains high ethical standards. Procter and Gamble does not tolerate using illegal or unethical practices anywhere in the world. Their products help improve the environment which improves the lives of both consumers and non-consumers. They have actively provided support after times of natural disaster. They encourage their employees to volunteer all over the world.
