Corporate Citizenship Programs

Galing Mason

Our flagship program is focused on uplifting Filipino masons through skills training and recognition of their important contribution in building the essential structures of society.

The graduates of the program are certified by a government authority, TESDA, as skilled laborers which opens up better opportunities for them.

This program has three components:
a. 'galing Mason Training which is a skills training and certification program that provides basic and advanced masonry skills training for prospective and uncertified masons.
b. 'galing Mason Olympics which allows our highly-skilled masons to participate in regional skills Olympics up to the world competition.
c. 'galing Mason Awards - a search for the most outstanding mason in the country. The winning mason is not only recognized for his/her skills but also as a respected person in the community.

Holcim Philippines’ CSR team implements projects and programs that cater to the developmental needs of the surrounding communities around its areas of operations.

Environmental Responsibility

Site beautification and biodiversity enhancement

In our Lugait plant, you will be surprised to see a butterfly garden. It is said that butterflies not only help enhance biodiversity, but they are also a barometer of a healthy environment.

Today, our Lugait plant is considered an industrial ecotourism center. Students, and even tourists visit our plant because of this, and our herbal garden and orchidarium.

Through our nursery operations, we have been able to propagate endemic species for our reforestation program.

Reforestation has been implemented in 61.64 hectares, with an 89.60% survival rate of trees planted.

Keeping the air clean: Measures to reduce emissions

Our company invested on a complete set of Continuous Emissions Monitoring System as part of its compliance to the Holcim Group requirement. This goes beyond the Philippine Clean Air Act requirement for a cement plant.

The CEMS enables us to monitor gaseous and dust emissions in real time.

To minimize fugitive dust, we maintain bag house filters and electrostatic precipitators in all our plants.

Holcim, as a founding member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development has committed to reduce emissions by 20% in the year 2010.

CO2 reduction through fuel substitution, energy efficiency and mineral components utilization

Through our alternative fuel and raw materials program, we are able to reduce our use of fossil fuel as we co-process agricultural and residual waste to derive thermal energy.

Because we respect the hierarchy of waste, our co-processing program does not hamper waste reduction efforts. We do not co-process waste if ecologically and economically better ways of recovery are available.

Our AFR program is guided by strict qualification criteria and lab testing procedure prior to co-processing and is monitored by regulators.

The impact to emissions is also carefully monitored.

Alternative raw materials include industrial waste, used tires, agricultural waste and residual waste like plastics.

Our AFR program provides a sustainable solution to waste management and helps minimize the country's carbon footprint. Waste such as rice hull which would normally be burned in the open thus producing CO2, is collected by Holcim and used as alternative fuel, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.
Holcim PH targets 400,000 beneficiaries of CSR programs by 2020

Building solutions provider Holcim Philippines, Inc. aims to help close to 400,000 people in its communities by 2020 through programs for shelter, infrastructure, education, livelihood, health and safety as part of its social responsibility and sustainability commitments to have a more positive impact on development.

Holcim Philippines unveiled these plans on July 26 during the launch of “Holcim Helps,” a campaign which standardizes the communication programs of its various sites for their communities particularly on social and environmental initiatives. The campaign also follows the LafargeHolcim Group’s sustainable development strategy which includes a set of actionable goals to contribute to the global efforts in tackling the pressing issues stated in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Holcim Philippines President and CEO John Stull said that “Holcim Helps” aims to make its communities and the public better understand and appreciate that Holcim Philippines’ programs are about working with our partners for a future for keeps.

“Holcim Helps” also underscores our goal of making our programs a collaboration with our communities instead of charitable donations as the primary form of assistance. Instead, our goal is to partner with them to better understand their needs and equip them with the means to improve their lives through capability-building initiatives for a more sustainable and lasting positive impact,” he said.

Since 2015, Holcim Philippines corporate citizenship programs have benefited close to 300,000 people in its communities and beyond. Education programs have received the largest share of funds for social programs at 32%, followed by livelihood and employment, as well as shelter and infrastructure that have each cornered a quarter of the budget, respectively.

HOLCIM PHILIPPINES' REGIONAL CSR AWARD. Building solutions provider Holcim Philippines, Inc.'s corporate social responsibility program for education, Foster a Child's Education (FACE) was recognized in the 2017 Asian Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards (AREA) in the Social Empowerment Category. Holcim Philippines Stakeholder Relations Officer Gizelle Ponce and Communication Assistant Nina Monasterial (second and third from left) received the award and certificate from Enterprise Asia Advisor Prof. Datuk Seri Victor Wee (leftmost) and from Enterprise Asia President Dato William Ng (rightmost) during the awarding ceremony in Bangkok on June 2.

Building solutions provider Holcim Philippines, Inc. was recognized at an Asian CSR Conference for its sustainable developmental program that brings together various stakeholders to support the education of children in communities.

Holcim Philippines’ education initiative, Foster a Child’s Education (FACE) received the prestigious Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards (AREA) citation and trophy in the social empowerment category on June 2 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Attended by international delegates from the business and corporate social responsibility community, the Awards Program cited FACE for successfully leading and building a network among employees and business partners who voluntarily support around 600 public elementary and high school students in 34 schools all over the country.

The Award is given to companies in Asia with sustainable business practices and show leadership and commitment to ethical values, respect for people, community participation and protection of the environment.

Holcim Head of Communication and Corporate Affairs Ritzi Villarico Ronquillo thanked all who have tirelessly given their time and resources to the scholars, saying that the award is shared with all FACE partners who each have a part in program ownership.

“An important part of FACE is that it also mobilizes a support system for these scholars to maintain their standing in the program. It recognizes each year FACE students who have done well in academics, extracurricular and leadership activities, and recognizes teachers and FACE coordinators for their support,” she said, adding, “This also includes looking after the scholars’ nutrition and health, providing academic and co-curricular support, organizing teacher supplemental activities and livelihood opportunities for scholars’ parents and local residents, and encouraging parents to actively support their children-scholars in parent-teacher associations.”

FACE is implemented by Holcim Philippines’ Communication and Corporate Affairs in collaboration with a network of employee volunteers in different sites, sponsors, and project partners like the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the Department of Education. It is guided by the belief that “it takes a village to raise a child,” thus, the partnerships with and engagement of the school administration, parents, community leaders and other stakeholders.
