Corporate Social Responsibility:
Do Good Feel Great
Corporate Social Responsibility at Watsons isn't just obligation. For us, It's an exciting opportunity to do good in the communities that we're part of- br=ecause a healthy thriving community helps all of us! Whether it's in the workplace, marketplace, environment or community at larg, were always looking for better ways to optimise our processes to ensure they're deloivering the greatest good for the greatest number.
Our employees Matters
Watsons is a place for everyone, and we strive to make it a fun, safe, healthy and supportive work environment for all our employees. We focus on four key areas to make sure all our staff are looked after properly:
• Diversity & Equal Opportunity
• Learning & Development
• Reward & Recognition
• Health & Safety
Creating Products Responsibly
We wouldn't much without our customers, so when it comes to product safety, quality and value we make there interests a to top priority! Our own brand products not only comply with legislation in all distribution markets, but also with our internal Group Quality Assurance requirements- from the manufacturing and development stages all the way to packaging and post- market surveillance.
Manufacturers
Good Manufacturing Practices
Rest assured, Watsons Own Brand products are made by the best. Our Supplier Qualification Audit program (SQA) subjects our manufacturers to regular audits by our QA engineers as well as independent agencies.
Good Social & Environmental Practices
When it comes to ensuring good social and environmental practices, Watsons has it covered — even in countries the Amfori classifies as “high risk”. We’re serious about Own Brand manufacturers in these places acknowledging the BSCI Code of Conduct, being regularly audited for social compliance by external companies approved by the BSCI, and assessing their environmental compliance with the Business Environmental Protection Initiative (BEPI) online tool. You can read more about the BSCI and the BEPI initiatives here.
Development Stages
Our multi-stage process is all about consistently ensuring only the best products reach our customers.
• We take product claims (like ‘dermatologically tested’) seriously, so we make sure each one is assured by independent institutes in Asia and/or Europe.
• All our formulated products are approved by an independent EU Toxicologist accredited by EUROTOX; the toxicological review is done on both raw materials and final formulations.
• We’ve got high standards, and we stick to them! We make sure all our standards are up to date and stringently apply them.
• No matter whether a product is formulated or non-formulated, it goes through the same rigorous product testing in ISO17025-accredited laboratories before and during manufacturing.
No Nasties
Watsons wants to keep you happy and healthy — so we keep our products free of anything dangerous! As well as complying with market-specific legislation on banned substances, we’ve also developed our own restricted list of ingredients we believe might be harmful based on opinions published by the Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety (SCCS) and other sources. We’re constantly updating our list as well, so we can implement controls in the development phase and post-market surveillance to make sure our Own Brand products are – and remain – totally safe.
Packaging
Even though we’re 100% dedicated to your personal well-being, we never forget the importance of taking care of the planet’s environment too.
We’re always looking for ways to reduce the volume and size of our Own Brand packaging, and to increase the amount of recycled material we use. At the same time, we ensure that all our packaging protects our products throughout their shelf life, is safe and can bear all the required labels in their destination markets. For cartons used when transporting products, we use them over and over until they sustain damage, then recycle them.
Here are some examples of the assessments we carry out once again :
• Organoleptic tests, to ensure product specifications haven’t been affected by external factors like storage conditions
• Testing for impurities, such as formaldehyde
• Microbiological cleanliness checks
Environment
"Making our Mark Without Leaving a Trace"
We might be a big company, but we’re conscious about treading lightly when it comes to the environment. We keep our environmental footprint to a minimum by investing solidly in these four key areas, with the goal of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions:
• Staff Awareness
• Utilities Consumption
• Waste Management
• Energy-Efficient Transport
Media Statement
Microplastics are solid synthetic polymer (plastic) particles, insoluble in water. Due to their small size (<5mm) they often pass through sewage water filtration systems and can pollute waterways; microplastics impact the food chain as they can be ingested by marine organisms. Cosmetics/ personal care products account for 2% of microplastic pollutants in the ocean*. Ahead of legislations, Watsons Singapore have banned the use of microplastic in rinse-off Watsons Brand Personal Care products since 2014.
To further fulfill our commitment to the environment, Watsons Singapore decided to extend the ban to all rinse-off cosmetics products / personal care products containing microplastics, and have creased the sales of such products since December 2016.
Community
There’s nothing feeling better than helping others! We’re committed to helping local charity organisations that allow us to have the most beneficial impact in the communities we serve.
Our three focus areas are:
• Donation & Fundraising
• Community Development
• Volunteering
