Corporate Social Responsibility

Sun Life Financial strengthens social responsibility programs

MANILA, Philippines - Global insurer Sun Life Financial steps up its commitment to social responsibility through the creation and support of worldwide initiatives related to health, arts and culture, social services, education, and sustainability.

In its recently-released public accountability statement, Sun Life Financial continues to focus on health and wellness initiatives, including the funding of the Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders Research & Rehabilitation Centre at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, to benefit patients with Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders; and support for the Sun Life Financial Health Information Centre at Toronto’s Bridgepoint Hospital—a resource centre where people living with complex chronic diseases can access information to help them cope with their conditions and make better, more informed decisions and choices to positively impact their overall well-being.

In the Philippines, Sun Life Financial carries out its social responsibility programs through the Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation, incorporated in 2008, to focus on four areas of concern: education & culture, health care, environment and social charities i.e. rehabilitation of disaster-affected communities.

Among its more recent endeavors are its ‘green’ activities highlighted by the Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation’s donation of more than P9.7 million in 2009 to support the rehabilitation of the Pasig River. The Foundation pledged a total of P49 million, spread over five years, for the Sun Life Financial Legacy of Light village, an environmentally friendly site for 580 new housing units to be built over the next five years at Calauan, in Laguna province. The Legacy of Light Village will initially build homes for some 114 famiies who have been relocated from the banks of the Pasig River. The Village have built-in rainwater harvesting systems, solar panels for energy and an eco-efficient environment.

In the area of education, the Sun Life Foundation has expanded its scholarship grants to 12 leading universities in the country. The grants are offered to college students taking up actuarial science, mathematics, agriculture, engineering and management.

The Foundation also signed a memorandum of agreement with the Knowledge Channel Foundation of the Lopez Group of Companies to provide P5.5 million for the production of a courseware on elementary algebra for airing over Knowledge Channel on cable TV nationwide. Around 300-350 public schools covering 500,000 public school students will directly benefit from this not counting the 2.7 million other students who have access to the Knowledge Channel.
